Multiple Job Holding, Local Labor Markets, and the Business Cycle

چکیده
Multiple Job Holding, Local Labor Markets, and the Business Cycle* About 5 percent of U.S. workers hold multiple jobs, which can exacerbate or mitigate employment changes over the business cycle. Theory is ambiguous and prior literature is not fully conclusive. We examine the relationship between multiple job holding and local unemployment rates using a large Current Population Survey data set of workers in urban labor markets during 1998-2013. High unemployment labor markets have moderately lower rates of multiple job holding. Yet no relationship between multiple job holding and unemployment is found within markets over time, with near zero estimates being precisely estimated. The response of multiple job holding to unemployment is acyclic. JEL Classification: J21

How Local Are Labor Markets?: Evidence from a Spatial Job Search Model
We use data at the Census ward level to investigate the extent to which labor markets are ‘local’. We present some non-structural estimates in which the probability of filling a vacancy is influenced by unemployment and vacancies in the surrounding areas, but we argue that these estimates cannot adequately estimate the true cost of distance. We then present a simple model of job-search across s...
متن کاملMismatch *
This paper develops a dynamic model of mismatch. Workers and jobs are randomly assigned to labor markets. Each labor market clears at each instant but some have more workers than jobs, hence unemployment, and some have more jobs than workers, hence vacancies. As workers and jobs move between labor markets, some unemployed workers find vacant jobs and some employed workers lose or leave their jo...
متن کاملLabor Market Dynamics in Developing Countries: Comparative Analysis using Continuous Time Markov Processes
This paper studies the dynamics of three developing country labor markets employing recent advances in the estimation of continuous time Markov processes. We first examine the flows of workers among five states: three types of paid labor, unemployment, and out of the labor force. We find a high degree of commonality in patterns of worker flows among the three countries and attempt to compare th...

Temporary Help Work: Compensating Differentials and Multiple Job-Holding Temporary Help Services (THS) employment has been growing in size, particularly among disadvantaged workers, and in importance in balancing cyclical fluctuations in labor demand. Does THS employment provide some benefits to disadvantaged workers, or divert them from better jobs? We investigate whether THS jobs pay a compen...
متن کاملThe Effect of Local Labor Markets on College Enrollment
A number of authors have investigated whether aggregate and! or local labor market conditions affect college enrollment, hut the results across studies are very inconsistent. There are two shortcomings in the previous studies that may explain the weak correlation between labor market opportunities and college enrollment. First, we will use the unique structure of the HS & B to construct unemplo...
